Civil Defence Centre Training: Designing for Resilience in Action
Updated: May 19, 2025
I recently participated in a Civil Defence Centre training day with Fire Rescue and First Response. It was a hands-on experience that went beyond theory, focusing on practical skills essential for emergency response.
We covered key areas such as establishing and managing Civil Defence Centres, coordinating volunteers, and ensuring effective communication during crises. The training emphasized the importance of adaptability and clear decision-making under pressure.
What stood out to me was how these operational aspects align with principles of design and community resilience. Setting up a functional centre in a high-stress environment requires thoughtful planning and an understanding of human needs, core elements in both design and emergency management.
This experience reinforced the value of integrating design thinking into resilience planning. It’s about creating systems and spaces that support communities not just in times of crisis but in building long-term strength and adaptability.
